QuickTime must be installed to use Aldus Fetch Browser for best results. (If you already have QuickTime installed, skip to Starting your Aldus Fetch Browser and Opening a Catalog.)
System 7
To install QuickTime, drag the QuickTime icon from the CD ROM over your closed system folder. A dialog box will inform you that QuickTime needs to be placed in your Extensions folder. Click OK. When it is finished copying, restart your computer.
System 6.0.x
To install QuickTime, drag the QuickTime icon from the CD ROM over your closed system folder. When it is finished copying, restart your computer.
Starting your Aldus Fetch Browser and Opening a Catalog
You can start Aldus Fetch Browser and open a catalog in any of these three ways:
• System 6.0.x: Double-click the Aldus Fetch Browser icon on your CD ROM, then choose Open... from the File menu.
• System 7: Double-click a catalog icon on your CD ROM.
• System 7: Drag a catalog icon onto the Aldus Fetch Browser application icon until both icons are highlighted, then release the mouse button.
The first time you start the Browser, you’ll be prompted to enter your name and company name. Once the catalog is open, the Find dialog box appears. Click Find All to display the entire contents of the catalog.
Using the Browser
Using the Find window in Aldus Fetch Browser, you can search by any combination of filename, keyword, file type, or volume. Choose Find from the Search menu to open the Find window or bring it to the front if it’s already open.
You can search on a single attribute. For example, you might search for items that contain the keyword “Autumn” as a single combined search. Or you can display the entire catalog at once (click Find All).
Aldus Fetch Browser displays found items in the Gallery window. You can resize the window or use the scroll bars to scroll to additional items in the window. You can also view the items as a text list that gives information on filename, file type, and other attributes of the items in the catalog (choose Text List from the View menu or double-click Thumbnail View in the upper right corner of the Gallery window).
In the Gallery window, you can also:
• Click an item (its thumbnail or text) to select it.
• Double-click an item to open a Preview window, where you can zoom in or out, or copy all or part of the item to the Clipboard for use in another document.
• Double-click the text below a thumbnail to get more information about the item.
In the Pasteboard window, you can temporarily store items retrieved from multiple searches. Using the Save As Project… command on the Item menu, you can name and save a group of items as a Aldus Fetch Browser “project” (for example, items needed for work in progress or items used frequently).
Use the commands on the Edit and Item menus to work with items selected in the Gallery or Pasteboards windows.
Using the Find Window for a simple search
Using the Find window, you can enter a single search description:
A Check the Keyword box to make a search description active.
B Choose an attribute: filename, keyword, file type, or volume. (The volume need not be mounted before a search.)
C Modify the chosen attribute: “matches,” “starts with,” “contains,” or “ends with” for a keyword or filename search; otherwise, choose a file type or volume name.
D For a keyword or filename search, type a name or part of a name here.
E Click Clear to clear and uncheck the search description.
F Click Find to start the search. Click Find All with no description checked to display the entire catalog.
Searching more efficiently
When you search on “Keyword” or “File Name”, choose “matches” from the modifier pop-up menu for the fastest searches, or “starts with” for searches that are nearly as fast. These searches are always among the fastest because Aldus Fetch Browser uses indexes built into the database.
When using “matches”, your keyword will find the keywords that match your keyword exactly. Using “starts with” will include all keywords that start with your keyword but will include a larger variety of images. If no (zero) choices come up (you will hear three barks) If only a few choices are appear, we recommend modifying your keyword; if it is singular make it plural; (if searching for a Holiday, for example, use Holidays.)
Other types of searches are usually slower because Aldus Fetch Browser must examine every entry in the database:
• Searching on a file type or volume is slower when there are a large number of items that match what you are looking for.
• Searching on keyword or filename using “contains” or “ends with ” is slower in larger catalog and is not recommended for the Incredible Image Pak catalog. If you choose to use this search, it can take some time to search the catalog (in some cases, 10-20 minutes.)
